Nuts Are Important!

Nuts help us to stay healthy by building important hormones that we need, and they provide long-lasting energy, and best of all they contribute to the formation of our brain and nervous system, by creating cell membranes.  Some of the healthiest nuts that you can consume are: Almonds, Pecans, Walnuts, Hazelnuts.
Nuts are one of the best plant sources of protein. They are rich in fiber, phytonutrients and antioxidants such as Vitamin E and selenium.  Nuts are also high in plant sterols and fat, but mostly monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats (Omega 3, the good fats) which have all been shown to lower LDL cholesterol. The best approach is to reap the health benefits of eating nuts but not add excessive calories to your daily intake. (Just as with everything else…moderation is key) So instead of simply adding nuts to your diet, eat them in replacement of foods that are high in processed carbohydrates and limit your intake of these tasty treats to 1 – 2 oz per day. Pistachios are seeds. Pine nuts are also seeds, and yes Cashews are seeds as well. Peanuts are the seeds of a legume – so replace your peanut butter with some tasty Raw Almond Butter – Yumm!

  1. Great post. Nuts are so nutritious and satisfying! As a gluten-free eater I’ve used them a lot in flours when baking. I often add them to my salads for texture and protein.

Your post discusses nuts as a source of plant sterols and for cholesterol management. Have you tried the gourmet wellness bars from http://www.KardeaNutrition.com? They come in 4 varieties (each with a nut component!), and each 150 calorie bar contains 7g each of protein & fiber, as well as 1g of heart-healthy plant sterols. Try them; they’re delicious!

  2. I actually do have something smart to say…. nuts are a great mid morning snack. They will boost your energy levels. But eat just a few! More than a handful is too much.
